Harmony and Symmetry. Celestial regularities shaping human culture - Insights into the connection between astronomy and humanity

“Harmony and Symmetry. Celestial regularities shaping human culture” by Gudrun Wolfschmidt
In “Harmony and Symmetry. Celestial regularities shaping human culture”, Gudrun Wolfschmidt presents the Proceedings of the SEAC 2018 Conference in Graz.

In 2018, the motto “Harmony and symmetry – celestial regularities shaping human culture” was chosen for the SEAC conference in Graz (2018). The connection between astronomy and human culture has an extremely long tradition. One important character in this connection is the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who spent his entire life searching for the relationship between the movement of heavenly lights and ideas about harmonious structures and regular bodies. Five contributions in this book deal with Kepler, including the harmony in musical theory. Another important inspiration for the topics in this book is Eggenberg Castle, a palace, which was built for nobleman Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg (1568-1634). Seven contributions have the topic astronomy, astrology and architecture with the emphasis on astronomical orientation, symmetry and harmony in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The Proceedings, which are presented in “Harmony and Symmetry. Celestial regularities shaping human culture” by Gudrun Wolfschmidt, are divided in ten chapters with 44 contributions. Topics range from the already mentioned ones to contributions about Prehistoric Times, Bronze and Iron Age, Mythology and Ethnoastronomy, Babylonian Astronomy, Greek and Roman Astronomy, Meso- and South America, Middle East and Eastern Asia and Computational Astronomy.  The book is a great read for people who have been to the SEAC conference in Graz and would like to refresh their memory, but is also suitable for anyone who would like to learn more about the connection between astronomy and humanity.
